Iceland Ring Road: Chasing Light in Shoulder Season
Ten days around Route 1 with waterfalls, hot springs, and weather that changes every twenty minutes.
Iceland in shoulder season is a gamble that usually pays off. I drove the Ring Road counterclockwise in ten days, with a rule: no rushing for photos when the sky was already perfect.
Highlights stacked quickly. Skogafoss at dawn, steam rising from a roadside hot spring while snow flurried sideways, and a night near Jokulsarlon when the lagoon looked like broken glass under pink clouds.
The country teaches humility. A forecast can lie, roads can close, and your itinerary should include the phrase "if conditions allow."
Packing list that mattered
- Waterproof shell over everything
- Microspikes for icy paths
- Thermos for endless coffee stops
